India is now the most populous country in the world with 1428.6 million population, 2.9 million more people than China. According to the latest data from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) report, China has a 1425.7 million of population.
The UNFPA’s ‘The State of World Population Report, 2023’, titled ‘8 Billion Lives, Infinite Possibilities released said, India’s population is 1,428.6 million while China’s stood at 1,425.7 million, a difference of 2.9 million. The data given in the Demographic Indicators section of the report suggests India is the most populous country.
It is the first time that India’s population has overtaken China’s since 1950 when the UN began to collect and release population data. China’s population decreased by 850,000 people in 2022, the first such decline since 1961.
The UNFPA report notes, 25% of India’s population is in the age group of 0-14, 18% in 10-19, 26% in the 10-24, 68% in 15-64, and 7% above 65. The corresponding figures for China are 17%, 12%, 18%, 69%, and 14%.
China is doing better than India in the context of life expectancy. In the case of women life expectancy is 82 years and 76 years that of men. The figures for India are 74 and 71, according to the UNFPA report.
Considering the total fertility rate per woman, the number is 2.0 for India while for Chin it is 1.2, according to the report.
