India experienced an unprecedented surge in wealth in 2023, creating a new billionaire every five days, according to the Hurun India Rich List 2024. The list, featuring 1,539 ultra-wealthy individuals, marks a significant milestone as it surpasses 1,500 entries for the first time. These individuals boast wealth exceeding Rs 1,000 crore, with an increase of 220 from the previous year.
Gautam Adani Tops the Hurun India Rich List 2024
Industrialist Gautam Adani and his family secured the top spot on the 2024 Hurun India Rich List with an astounding wealth of Rs 11.6 trillion. Mukesh Ambani follows closely with Rs 10.1 trillion. The number of billionaires in India has now crossed the 300 mark, reaching 334 — six times more than when the list first debuted 13 years ago.
Wealth Concentrated in India’s Key Cities
India’s billionaires are distributed across 134 cities, with Mumbai, the financial capital, hosting five of the top 10 wealthiest individuals. The report reveals that 18 individuals have amassed wealth of at least Rs 1 trillion.
Bollywood Superstar Shah Rukh Khan Joins Billionaire Club
Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan made his debut on the Hurun India Rich List 2024 as a billionaire, with a net worth of Rs 7,300 crore. His wealth growth is attributed to investments in the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders and his production company, Red Chillies Entertainment. Other Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Karan Johar, and Juhi Chawla also feature on the list.
Wealth Surpasses Half of India’s GDP
The total wealth of individuals on the list has reached Rs 159 trillion, surpassing the combined GDP of Saudi Arabia and Switzerland. This figure represents more than half of India’s national GDP.
Youngest and Oldest Billionaires in India. Hurun India Rich List
Harshil Mathur and Shashank Kumar, both 33 and founders of the payment solution app Razorpay, are the youngest billionaires on the list. The youngest overall is Zepto’s Kaivalya Vohra, while the oldest debutant is 95-year-old Hanwantbir Kaur Sahney of NBR Bearings Company.
