According to the Global Report on Food crises (GRFC), in 2021, almost 40 million people were facing a food Emergency. 193 million people are acutely food insecure and in need of urgent assistance across 53ย countries/territories.

Hunger remains alarmingly high

In 2021, almost 40 million people were facing Emergency or worse conditions, across 36 countries. Over half a million people face starvation and death in four countries: Ethiopia, South Sudan, southern Madagascar, and Yemen. The number of people facing these dire conditions is four times than in 2020 and seven times higher than in 2016.

Globally, levels of hunger remain alarmingly high. In 2021, they surpassed all previous records as reported by the Globalย Reportย on Food Crises. 193 million people are acutely food insecure and in need of urgent assistance across 53ย countries/territories.

Highest food Insecurity in last six years

In 2021, around 193 million people were in Crisis or worse or equivalent in 53 countries/territories. It is an increase of nearly 40 million people since 2020 and the highest number in the reportโ€™s six-year existence. The global figure identified in the 2022 edition is the highest in the reportโ€™s six-year existence, exceeding the previous five-year high reported in the GRFC 2021 by nearly 25ย percent.

A grim outlook for 2022

The situation would be worse in 2022. In 41 out of the 53ย countries/territories, between 179 million and 181 million people would be in Crisis. For most of the worldโ€™s major food crises, acute food insecurity to persist at similar levels to 2021 or increase.
